Custom Tooling for Long Tapered Street Light Pole Bending
Street light poles and other large lighting poles usually have a tapered structure: the upper end is relatively narrow, while the lower end gradually increases in size. This changing cross-section makes the bending process significantly more demanding than conventional straight-profile sheet metal forming.
The video demonstrates a custom long press brake tooling solution developed for tapered street light pole production.
Unlike standard press brake dies with a consistent profile along their entire length, tooling for tapered poles must be manufactured according to the dimensional transition of the workpiece. The geometry of the tooling therefore changes progressively along the bending length so that the formed pole can maintain the required taper from the smaller top section to the larger base section.
One of the main challenges is maintaining dimensional accuracy over an extremely long working length. Even a relatively small deviation in tooling geometry can accumulate along the pole and affect the final straightness, taper and cross-sectional consistency.
For this reason, the manufacturing process requires precise control of both the longitudinal accuracy and the taper geometry of the press brake tooling.
For particularly long street light poles, a single press brake may not provide sufficient working length. In these applications, two synchronized press brakes can operate together as a tandem press brake system. Both machines must move in a coordinated manner so that the long workpiece is bent evenly across the complete forming length.
The tooling used in a tandem press brake application must also maintain consistent alignment between the two machines. The individual tooling sections therefore need accurate machining and installation positioning to minimize mismatch at the connection area.
