Rolling Offset Forming Directly on a Turret Punch Press
A Rolling Offset Tool is a special forming tool used on CNC turret punch presses to produce a continuous offset, step or height transition in sheet metal.
Unlike conventional punching tools that repeatedly move vertically to create a feature point by point, rolling tools form the sheet continuously while the machine table moves the workpiece through the tooling. This rolling action makes it possible to create long and relatively smooth formed profiles directly in the punch press.
The tool shown in this video is a Rolling Offset Tool for thick turret tooling applications.
It is important to distinguish this tool from a Rolling Rib Tool. A Rolling Rib Tool is mainly used to create reinforcing ribs or beads that increase panel stiffness, while a Rolling Offset Tool is designed to create a stepped change in sheet height. Major tooling manufacturers also classify Rolling Offset and Rolling Rib as separate rolling-forming applications.
How the Rolling Offset Tool Works
During forming, the upper and lower rolling elements engage the sheet while the turret punch press moves the workpiece horizontally.
Instead of producing the offset through a series of conventional individual forming hits, the rollers continuously guide and deform the sheet along the programmed path. This allows a consistent offset profile to be created over a longer distance.
The rolling method can also reduce the visible nibble marks commonly associated with progressive forming operations. Industry references describe Rolling Offset tooling as capable of producing offsets along straight or curved paths, depending on machine configuration and auto-index capability.
Reducing Secondary Press Brake Operations
One of the most useful advantages of Rolling Offset tooling is that the offset can be produced directly on the turret punch press.
In many conventional production processes, the sheet may first be punched and then transferred to a press brake or another forming machine to create the offset. Integrating the offset operation into the punch press can reduce material handling, machine changes and secondary forming steps.
This is particularly valuable for sheet metal parts where punching and offset forming are required on the same component.
Consistent Offset Height and Smooth Forming
The performance of a rolling offset tool depends heavily on the accuracy of the roller geometry, alignment between the upper and lower tooling, and control of the forming depth.
For long continuous offsets, even small deviations in roller positioning can affect the consistency of the formed height. Precision machining and correct tooling adjustment are therefore important for achieving a stable profile across the entire programmed path.
