High-Precision U-Shaped Forming with Springback Compensation
Springback is one of the most important factors to consider when bending sheet metal into a U-shaped profile. After the bending force is released, elastic recovery of the material can cause the formed angles and dimensions to deviate from the intended geometry.
For U-shaped components, this effect becomes particularly important because multiple formed surfaces must maintain their required positional and angular relationship. If springback is not properly considered during tooling design, the two sides of the finished U-profile may open outward or fail to reach the required dimensions.
The custom press brake tooling shown in this video was developed specifically to address this challenge.
Springback Compensation Built into the Tooling Design
Rather than relying only on conventional bending geometry, the tooling is designed with the expected material springback in mind. The forming geometry compensates for elastic recovery so that, after the forming pressure is released, the workpiece can return toward the required final U-shaped profile.
This approach requires a clear understanding of the workpiece geometry, material characteristics, sheet thickness and expected springback behavior.
One-Stroke U-Shaped Forming
A major advantage of this tooling solution is that the U-shaped profile can be formed in a single press stroke.
Compared with producing the profile through several independent bending operations, one-stroke forming can reduce repeated positioning and handling of the workpiece. More importantly, the relationship between the two sides of the U-profile is controlled by the same tooling system during forming, helping improve dimensional consistency and repeatability.
High Dimensional Accuracy
Producing an accurate U-shaped component requires more than achieving the correct bending angle. Sidewall position, profile width, forming depth and overall symmetry can all influence whether the finished component meets its dimensional requirements.
For this reason, precision machining of the punch and die, accurate matching of the forming surfaces, and appropriate springback compensation are important elements of the tooling design.
This type of custom forming solution can be used for U-shaped sheet metal parts, channels, structural profiles, enclosures, equipment components and other applications requiring accurate multi-side forming.
