V160 Laser-Hardened Die for Heavy Plate Bending

V160 Laser-Hardened Die for Heavy Plate Bending

Large V-opening press brake dies are commonly used when bending thicker plate. As material thickness and forming load increase, the working surfaces of the lower die are subjected to greater pressure and repeated wear.

For this application, WYS Machinery manufactured a V160 lower die with laser-hardened working surfaces, reaching a hardness of HRC 54±2.

Why Laser Harden a Large V-Opening Die?

During bending, the sheet continuously contacts the shoulders and working surfaces of the V-die. In demanding thick-plate applications, repeated high-load contact gradually causes wear in these critical areas.

Laser hardening increases the surface hardness and wear resistance of the working area while retaining the required properties of the main die body.

For this reason, WYS Machinery recommends considering laser hardening for large V-opening dies used in heavy plate bending, especially where the tooling is exposed to frequent production and high forming loads.

Longer Tool Life for Heavy Plate Applications

The primary purpose of laser hardening is not to change the function of the V-die, but to improve its durability under demanding working conditions.

Compared with an unhardened working surface, the HRC 54±2 laser-hardened area provides better wear resistance, helping maintain the die profile and extend tooling service life.

This makes the process particularly suitable for:

  • Heavy plate bending
  • Large V-opening lower dies
  • High-load forming applications
  • Repetitive production
  • Applications requiring improved tooling durability

Custom V-Die Solutions

The V160 die shown here represents one heavy-duty configuration. WYS Machinery can manufacture other V-opening sizes according to the customer's material thickness, bending requirements and press brake capacity.

Mounting and tooling interfaces can also be customized, including TRUMPF Type, WILA Type, BYSTRONIC Type and LVD Type structures.

Customers can provide their workpiece drawings, material thickness and machine information, allowing our engineering team to recommend a suitable V-opening, tooling structure and surface-hardening solution.
