Description
The 85 Series B Station RE2X20 Rectangular Thick Turret Punch is a precision cutting component designed for producing nominal 2 × 20 mm rectangular holes in sheet metal.
In the designation “RE2X20,” “RE” identifies the rectangular profile, while “2X20” represents the nominal width and length of the punching profile. The narrow 2 mm width makes accurate tool manufacturing, correct punch-to-die alignment and suitable cutting clearance especially important.
This product is supplied as a punch, not as a complete punch assembly. A complete assembly may include the punch, guide, stripper, spring components and other supporting parts. These components, together with the matching lower die, can be supplied separately or as a complete tooling set when required.
The RE2X20 punch is manufactured from M2 high-speed steel and heat-treated to a working hardness of HRC 58–60. M2 provides the toughness and wear resistance required for repeated punching while helping reduce premature edge breakdown in narrow rectangular profiles.
Optional TiN or TiCN coatings can be applied to improve surface hardness, reduce friction and minimize adhesive material buildup. WYS Machinery can also customize the punch-tip geometry, matching die opening, cutting clearance and tooling configuration according to the customer’s sheet material, thickness, machine model and finished-part drawing.

Punch vs. Punch Assembly
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Punch | The individual cutting component that penetrates the sheet |
| Punch Assembly | A complete upper-tool system that may include the punch, guide, stripper and spring components |
| Punch and Die Set | The upper punch together with its matching lower die |
| RE2X20 Product on This Page | Individual rectangular punch |
This distinction helps customers order the correct replacement component. If a customer requires the guide, stripper or matching die, the machine model and existing tooling configuration should be provided.
RE2X20 Profile and Die Clearance
RE2X20 identifies the nominal 2 × 20 mm punch profile. The matching lower-die opening must be manufactured with the appropriate cutting clearance.
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Nominal Punch Profile | 2 × 20 mm rectangle |
| Matching Die Opening | Punch dimensions plus selected total clearance |
| Clearance Selection | Based on material type, thickness and tensile strength |
| Finished-Hole Quality | Influenced by clearance, alignment and cutting-edge condition |
Correct clearance helps:
- Reduce punching force
- Control burr height
- Improve slug release
- Reduce adhesive material buildup
- Prevent premature punch wear
- Protect the narrow cutting edges
- Improve finished-hole consistency
- Extend the service life of the punch and die
Because the punch width is only 2 mm, insufficient clearance, excessive side loading or incorrect alignment may increase the risk of chipping or breakage.
Typical Hits Before Regrinding
| Sheet Material | Approximate Hits Before Regrinding |
|---|---|
| Stainless Steel | Approximately 300,000 hits |
| Mild Steel | Approximately 500,000 hits |
These are typical reference values rather than guaranteed limits. Actual performance depends on:
- Sheet material and tensile strength
- Material thickness
- Punch-to-die clearance
- Punching frequency
- Punching speed
- Tool alignment
- Lubrication
- Coating selection
- Punch-tip geometry
- Machine condition
- Maintenance and regrinding practices
For a narrow RE2X20 rectangular punch, regular cutting-edge inspection is recommended. Regrinding should be performed before excessive rounding, chipping or burr growth develops.
Typical Tool Service Life
| Tool Profile | Approximate Total Service Life |
|---|---|
| Round Tooling | Approximately 800,000 hits |
| Shaped Tooling | Approximately 600,000–700,000 hits |
| RE2X20 Rectangular Punch | Refer to the Shaped Tooling Range |
RE2X20 is classified as shaped tooling. Its actual service life may vary because its narrow rectangular geometry produces different stress distribution from a round punch.
Correct die clearance, accurate alignment, suitable lubrication and timely regrinding are essential for maximizing total service life.
Optional TiN and TiCN Coatings
TiN Coating
TiN provides a hard, low-friction surface that helps reduce adhesive wear and material buildup on the sides of the punch. It is suitable for many general-purpose mild-steel and sheet metal punching applications.
TiCN Coating
TiCN provides higher hardness and enhanced resistance to abrasive and adhesive wear. It is particularly useful when processing stainless steel, higher-strength sheet materials or high-volume production runs.
The appropriate coating should be selected according to the sheet material, thickness, punching frequency and required tool life.
Punch-Tip Geometry
The cutting end of the RE2X20 punch can be produced with a standard flat profile or customized shear geometry according to the application.
Suitable shear geometry may help:
- Reduce peak punching force
- Lower punching noise
- Improve load distribution
- Reduce machine vibration
- Support punching of demanding materials
- Improve slug control in suitable applications
The selected tip geometry must match the sheet material, thickness, machine tonnage and required part quality. Custom shear designs should be confirmed during tooling engineering.
Typical Applications
The RE2X20 B Station rectangular punch is suitable for producing narrow rectangular holes in:
- Electrical cabinets and control enclosures
- Switchgear and distribution equipment
- Sheet metal panels and housings
- Electronic equipment enclosures
- HVAC and ventilation components
- Machinery covers and protective guards
- Metal furniture and storage systems
- Automotive sheet metal components
- Appliance panels
- Mounting plates and brackets
- Precision sheet metal assemblies
Typical hole functions include:
- Narrow ventilation slots
- Cable-routing openings
- Locating and positioning features
- Assembly interfaces
- Tab and fastening slots
- Anti-rotation features
- Component mounting holes
- Repeated slot patterns
- Functional rectangular openings
The punch may also be used for programmed nibbling or extended slot production when the overlap, feed direction and side-load conditions are properly evaluated.
Manufacturing Quality
The RE2X20 punch is manufactured using M2 high-speed steel, controlled heat treatment and precision grinding processes.
Special attention is given to:
- 2 mm narrow cutting width
- Parallelism of the long cutting edges
- Accuracy of the short ends
- Cutting-edge sharpness
- Punch-tip geometry
- Profile dimensions
- Concentricity and alignment
- Surface finish
- Heat-treatment consistency
Accurate geometry helps the punch align correctly with the matching die and produce consistent rectangular holes. Controlled heat treatment provides a balance between hardness, toughness and resistance to premature chipping.
Each punch can be inspected for dimensional accuracy, hardness, surface finish and fit with the corresponding thick turret tooling system.
Tool Maintenance and Regrinding
The punch should be inspected regularly for:
- Cutting-edge rounding
- Corner chipping
- Adhesive material buildup
- Uneven side wear
- Increased burr height
- Abnormal punching noise
- Excessive stripping force
- Misalignment with the die
Regrinding should be carried out before serious wear develops. Light and timely regrinding removes less material and helps preserve the total usable length of the punch.
After regrinding, the punch length and assembly setup should be adjusted where necessary before returning the tool to production.
