Description

The S90 Series B Station RE5X30 Replaceable-Tip Thick Turret Tooling Set is engineered for accurate and repeatable punching of nominal 5 × 30 mm rectangular holes on compatible CNC thick turret punch presses.

In the designation “RE5X30,” “RE” identifies the rectangular punching profile, while “5X30” represents the nominal width and length of the punch tip.

The defining feature of the S90 Series is its modular replaceable punch-tip construction. The front cutting component can be removed and replaced independently when it becomes worn, damaged or unsuitable for a new production requirement. The customer does not need to replace the complete punch body and other reusable upper-tool components.

This replaceable-tip system helps reduce tooling costs, simplify maintenance, minimize spare-parts inventory and shorten production downtime. Compatible replacement tips can be supplied separately according to the required size, profile and tooling configuration.

This product is supplied as a complete matched tooling set. It includes the upper punch assembly, replaceable RE5X30 punch tip, guide and stripping components, together with the corresponding lower die.

The replaceable cutting tip is manufactured from M2 high-speed steel, while the matching die is manufactured from DC53 tool steel. The working components are heat-treated to HRC 58–60 to provide cutting-edge hardness, toughness, compressive strength and dimensional stability.

The actual die opening and punch-to-die clearance are customized according to the customer’s sheet material, thickness, tensile strength and required edge quality. Optional TiN or TiCN coatings and customized punch-tip geometry are also available.

Replaceable Punch Tip Design

The S90 Series uses a modular punch construction in which the cutting tip is separated from the reusable punch body.

When the RE5X30 cutting edge reaches its regrinding limit or becomes damaged, only the front punch tip needs to be replaced. The punch body, adjustment mechanism and other compatible upper-tool components can remain in service.

This construction provides several practical benefits:

  • Reduces the cost of replacing worn cutting components
  • Avoids replacing the complete punch body
  • Reduces consumption of high-grade tool steel
  • Simplifies replacement-parts management
  • Requires less storage space for spare tooling
  • Shortens tooling maintenance time
  • Reduces machine downtime
  • Supports economical management of multiple tooling requirements

Replacement tips must match the punch body, guide, stripper, angular orientation and lower die. Compatibility between different sizes or profiles should therefore be confirmed before ordering.

RE5X30 Profile and Customized Die Clearance

The RE5X30 designation describes the nominal 5 × 30 mm punch-tip profile. It does not represent the exact opening dimensions of the matching lower die.

The actual die opening must include the selected cutting clearance:

ItemDescription
Nominal Punch Profile5 × 30 mm rectangle
Matching Die OpeningPunch dimensions plus selected total clearance
Clearance SelectionBased on material, thickness and tensile strength
Final Die DimensionsConfirmed during tooling engineering

WYS Machinery can customize the die clearance for:

  • Mild steel
  • Stainless steel
  • Aluminum
  • Galvanized steel
  • Copper
  • Other suitable sheet materials
  • Different sheet thicknesses
  • Specific burr and edge-quality requirements

Correct cutting clearance helps:

  • Reduce required punching force
  • Control burr height
  • Improve slug separation
  • Reduce stripping resistance
  • Prevent adhesive material buildup
  • Protect the narrow cutting edges
  • Reduce uneven punch-tip loading
  • Maintain consistent hole dimensions
  • Extend punch-tip and die service life

Long and Narrow Profile Control

The RE5X30 profile has a 6:1 length-to-width ratio. Its elongated geometry requires accurate alignment and uniform clearance around the complete cutting profile.

Important operating factors include:

  • Uniform clearance along both long edges
  • Consistent clearance at both short ends
  • Accurate punch-tip orientation
  • Stable guide support
  • Correct stripper pressure
  • Suitable lubrication
  • Prevention of excessive lateral loading
  • Regular cutting-edge inspection

If the clearance or alignment is incorrect, one edge may contact the sheet before the opposite edge. This can result in uneven burrs, twisting force, localized wear or premature damage to the replaceable tip.

Punching Force and Punch-Tip Geometry

The RE5X30 profile has a nominal cutting perimeter of 70 mm. The required punching force depends on:

  • Sheet material
  • Material shear strength
  • Sheet thickness
  • Cutting perimeter
  • Punch-to-die clearance
  • Punch-tip geometry
  • Machine condition
  • Lubrication

A suitable sheared punch tip can progressively engage the sheet and help reduce peak punching force, noise and machine vibration.

The appropriate shear direction and height should be selected according to the material, thickness, machine tonnage, slug behavior and finished-part requirements.

Typical Hits Before Regrinding

Sheet MaterialApproximate Hits Before Regrinding
Stainless SteelApproximately 300,000 hits
Mild SteelApproximately 500,000 hits

These figures are typical reference values rather than guaranteed limits. Actual regrinding intervals depend on the sheet material, thickness, tensile strength, cutting clearance, lubrication, coating, punching speed, machine alignment and maintenance conditions.

The long cutting edges and short ends of the RE5X30 tip should be inspected regularly. Regrinding should be performed before excessive edge rounding, chipping or burr growth develops.

Typical Tool Service Life

Tool ProfileApproximate Total Service Life
Round ToolingApproximately 800,000 hits
Shaped ToolingApproximately 600,000–700,000 hits
RE5X30 Replaceable Punch TipRefer to the Shaped Tooling Range

RE5X30 is classified as shaped tooling. Its actual service life depends strongly on punch-to-die clearance, tool alignment, stripper performance, coating selection and timely regrinding.

The replaceable-tip structure allows the worn cutting component to be replaced without discarding the reusable punch body.

Optional TiN and TiCN Coatings

TiN Coating

TiN provides a hard, low-friction surface that helps reduce adhesive wear and material buildup. It is suitable for many general-purpose punching applications involving mild steel and other common sheet materials.

TiCN Coating

TiCN offers higher hardness and enhanced resistance to abrasive and adhesive wear. It is particularly suitable for stainless steel, higher-strength sheet materials and high-volume production.

The appropriate coating should be selected according to the material, thickness, punching frequency and required tool life.

Manufacturing Quality

The replaceable RE5X30 punch tip and matching die are manufactured using selected tool steels, controlled heat treatment and precision grinding.

Manufacturing control focuses on:

  • Accuracy of the 5 mm punch-tip width
  • Consistency of the 30 mm cutting length
  • Parallelism of the long cutting edges
  • Accuracy of the short ends
  • Fit between the replaceable tip and punch body
  • Punch-tip angular orientation
  • Alignment with the guide and stripper
  • Punch-to-die clearance consistency
  • Cutting-edge sharpness
  • Surface finish
  • Heat-treatment consistency

Accurate manufacturing helps the replaceable tip remain securely positioned and properly aligned during punching. It also supports consistent hole dimensions while reducing uneven wear, burr variation and premature cutting-edge damage.

Tool Maintenance and Punch-Tip Replacement

The tooling should be inspected regularly for:

  • Cutting-edge rounding
  • Chipping at the short ends
  • Uneven wear along the long edges
  • Adhesive material buildup
  • Increased burr height
  • Excessive stripping force
  • Punch-tip movement or looseness
  • Punch and die misalignment
  • Guide and stripper wear

The punch tip should be reground before severe wear develops. Timely light regrinding removes less material and helps extend the usable life of the tip.

When the punch tip reaches its regrinding limit or becomes damaged, it can be removed and replaced independently. Before installing a new tip, the punch body, retaining structure, guide and stripper should be cleaned and inspected.

After replacement, the punch-tip orientation, tool length, assembly settings and alignment with the matching die should be verified before production resumes.
