Description

The TRUMPF Type Size II 6-Hole Multi-Hole Punching Tool is a customized punch-and-die system designed to produce multiple holes simultaneously during a single punching stroke.

The tooling shown on this page is a Size II / Size 2 custom multi-hole tool manufactured as a demonstration sample. It incorporates six identical hexagonal punching profiles arranged in two columns and three rows. When the tool performs one complete punching stroke, all six hexagonal holes can be produced simultaneously.

This is fundamentally different from a Multi-Tool / multi-station tooling system. A multi-hole tool uses multiple punching points together during the same stroke, while a multi-tool contains multiple independent tooling stations that are selected according to the required punching operation.

The six-hole hexagonal configuration shown here is only one example. We can customize the number of holes, hole dimensions, hole shape, spacing and overall hole pattern according to the customer's component drawing and production requirements.

Six Holes in One Punching Stroke

The main advantage of this tooling is its ability to produce multiple holes simultaneously.

With the sample tool shown on this page:

1 punching stroke → 6 hexagonal holes

Instead of punching each hole individually through six separate machine positioning and punching operations, the six punching profiles work simultaneously during the same stroke.

For workpieces requiring the same repeated hole pattern, this can significantly reduce the number of punching cycles required for each component.

Custom Hexagonal Multi-Hole Punch

The sample configuration contains six regular hexagonal punching profiles.

The six punches are arranged in a 2 × 3 pattern, with corresponding openings incorporated into the lower die.

When the upper and lower tooling work together, the six cutting profiles simultaneously shear the sheet and create the required hexagonal hole pattern.

The dimensions shown are not a fixed standard. The sample is intended to demonstrate our ability to manufacture custom multi-hole punch and die tooling.

Custom Hole Quantity

The number of punching points does not have to be limited to six.

Depending on the available tooling space, required hole dimensions, pitch, sheet material, thickness, machine capacity and other technical conditions, a multi-hole tool can be designed with a different number of punching points.

For example, a customized tool may be developed around the customer's required:

Hole Quantity → Hole Size → Hole Spacing → Pattern → Sheet Material → Sheet Thickness

The final tooling configuration should therefore be determined according to the actual workpiece and punching conditions rather than simply selecting a fixed number of holes.

Custom Hole Size, Spacing and Arrangement

For multi-hole tooling, the hole pattern is just as important as the individual hole geometry.

Customers can specify:

  • Individual hole dimensions
  • Center-to-center spacing
  • Row spacing
  • Column spacing
  • Number of rows
  • Number of columns
  • Overall pattern dimensions
  • Orientation of the punching profiles

This allows the multi-hole punch to reproduce a specific repeated hole pattern directly from the component design.

For custom applications, providing the finished workpiece drawing is usually the most effective way to determine the tooling configuration.

Custom Hole Shapes

The sample shown uses a regular hexagonal profile, but custom multi-hole tooling is not limited to hexagonal holes.

Depending on the application, multi-hole punching tools can be designed around various profiles, including:

  • Round holes
  • Square holes
  • Rectangular holes
  • Obround / oblong holes
  • Hexagonal holes
  • Slot-type profiles
  • Other custom punching profiles

The feasibility of a particular profile, quantity and arrangement should be evaluated according to the tooling size and actual punching conditions.

Multi-Hole Tool vs. Multi-Tool

This distinction is particularly important:

Multi-Hole Punching ToolMulti-Tool / Multi-Station Tool
Multiple punching points work togetherContains multiple independent tooling stations
Produces multiple holes in one strokeUses the required tooling station for a specific operation
Sample produces 6 holes simultaneouslyStations can contain different punches
Hole pattern is designed as one punching operationDifferent stations provide different tooling options
Main purpose: reduce strokes for repeated hole patternsMain purpose: increase tooling flexibility
Example: 6 hexagonal holes in one strokeExample: RO + SQ + RE + OB sub-tools in one Multi-Tool

For this reason, this product is correctly classified as a Multi-Hole Punching Tool, not a Multi-Tool.

Why Use a Multi-Hole Punching Tool?

For a component containing a repeated fixed hole pattern, punching each hole individually requires multiple machine movements and punching cycles.

A properly designed multi-hole tool can combine those punching points into a single operation.

For the six-hole sample:

Conventional individual punching: up to 6 punching strokes for one six-hole pattern
Multi-hole tooling: 1 punching stroke for the complete six-hole pattern

This can provide important advantages in suitable production applications:

  • Fewer punching cycles
  • Reduced machine positioning for repeated patterns
  • Higher productivity
  • Consistent relative hole positioning
  • Efficient production of repetitive components
  • Simplified punching sequence

Actual production improvement depends on the component, machine configuration and manufacturing process.

Typical Applications

TRUMPF Type Size II multi-hole punching tools can be suitable for repetitive hole patterns used in:

  • Electrical cabinets
  • Control panels
  • Switchgear components
  • Ventilation panels
  • Equipment housings
  • Machine enclosures
  • Mounting plates
  • Sheet metal brackets
  • HVAC components
  • Industrial panels
  • Filter and ventilation components
  • Automotive sheet metal parts
  • Machinery components
  • Custom fabricated sheet metal products

The tooling is particularly valuable for medium- and high-volume components requiring the same group of holes repeatedly.

Custom Multi-Hole Tooling from Your Drawing

Multi-hole tooling is inherently application-specific, so customer drawings are especially important.

Customers can provide:

  • Finished workpiece drawing
  • DXF / CAD drawing
  • Required hole shape
  • Hole dimensions
  • Number of holes
  • Hole spacing
  • Hole pattern
  • Sheet material
  • Sheet thickness
  • Machine/tooling information

Based on these parameters, we can evaluate and manufacture the corresponding TRUMPF Type custom multi-hole punch and die.

The six-hexagon tool displayed on this page is therefore not a limitation of the available design. It demonstrates the ability to integrate multiple punching points into one customized tooling system for multiple-hole punching in a single stroke.
