Description

This WILA Type U-profile hemming punch is designed for the pre-bending and flattening of narrow U-shaped sheet metal profiles. Its 10 mm-wide working nose enters the customized lower-tool profile and helps form or flatten the two folded sides of the component.

The 28° working angle supports deep pre-bending before the final flattening operation. Its R1 mm tip radius provides accurate bend-line control when processing suitable thin-sheet materials.

With a working height of 120 mm and maximum rated load of 50 ton/m, this punch is commonly used for approximately 1.2 mm sheet metal. It is manufactured from 42CrMo alloy steel and hardened to HRC54±2 for reliable wear resistance and forming accuracy.

The dimensions shown in the drawing represent one reference design. The working height, nose width, angle, radius, mounting structure and mating lower tool can all be customized according to the customer’s workpiece.

These specifications describe the displayed design only. Tool height, width, angle, radius, working-nose dimensions and mounting profile can be modified according to the required component geometry.

Working Principle

This punch is normally used as part of a customized multi-stage forming process:

Pre-Bending

The 28° working tip creates the initial acute bends required on the sheet-metal profile.

U-Profile Forming

The workpiece is formed into the required narrow U-shaped or double-folded profile using a matched lower tool.

Flattening

The folded sections are compressed to achieve the specified final gap, width or closed condition.

The exact forming sequence depends on the workpiece shape and mating lower-tool design. Some components may require separate pre-bending and flattening operations, while a customized tooling system may combine multiple functions.

Typical Applications

This U-profile hemming punch can be used for:

  • Forming narrow U-shaped folded profiles
  • Pre-bending approximately 1.2 mm sheet
  • Flattening double-folded sheet-metal edges
  • Producing reinforced edges
  • Creating narrow channels and edge profiles
  • Electrical cabinet and enclosure components
  • Metal doors and access panels
  • Machinery covers and protective guards
  • Appliance and metal-furniture components
  • Automotive and transportation sheet-metal parts
  • Mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium fabrication
  • Customized multi-stage press brake forming

The stated 1.2 mm thickness is a typical application reference rather than a fixed limit. Suitability depends on the material grade, ductility, profile width, bending length, required final gap and forming sequence.

Product Details & Manufacturing Quality

The 10 mm nose and 28° working tip are precision machined to control the profile width and bend position during forming. Consistent geometry helps the punch align accurately with the customized lower tool and supports repeatable production.

The punch is manufactured from selected 42CrMo alloy steel. Its working region is hardened to HRC54±2 to improve resistance to wear, indentation and deformation.

Because U-profile hemming applies force to a relatively narrow working section, forming pressure must be controlled carefully. The required force must remain within the rated capacities of the punch, matching lower tool, clamping system and press brake.
