Description

This WILA Type two-stage hemming tool integrates acute pre-bending and final flattening functions into one compact tooling system. It is commonly used to produce open, closed or partially closed hems in sheet metal approximately 0.8 mm thick.

During the first operation, the V6/30° groove creates an acute pre-bend. The workpiece is then repositioned in the flattening area, where the folded edge is pressed to the required final gap or closed condition.

The tool has a closed working height of 88 mm and a body width of 63 mm. Its maximum rated load is 60 ton/m. Manufactured from 42CrMo alloy steel and hardened to HRC54±2, it provides reliable wear resistance and repeatable forming performance.

The stated 0.8 mm thickness is a typical application reference rather than an absolute limit. The suitable material range depends on the material grade, ductility, required hem gap, bending length and forming method.

Two-Stage Hemming Process

Stage 1 – Acute Pre-Bending

The sheet is placed over the V6/30° groove and formed into an acute angle. This creates the preliminary fold required for the hemming process.

Stage 2 – Flattening

The pre-bent edge is moved to the flattening section and compressed to produce the required hem. The final result may be an open hem with a controlled gap, a closed hem or another specified folded-edge profile.

The material should not normally be flattened directly from an unbent condition. A controlled pre-bend helps improve positioning, folding consistency and finished-edge quality.

Typical Applications

This WILA Type hemming tool is suitable for:

  • Hemming approximately 0.8 mm sheet metal
  • Forming folded safety edges
  • Producing open and closed hems
  • Electrical cabinets and control enclosures
  • Metal doors and access panels
  • Equipment housings and machinery covers
  • HVAC panels and ventilation components
  • Appliance sheet metal parts
  • Metal furniture and storage cabinets
  • Mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium sheet
  • Batch production requiring repeatable folded edges

The appropriate hem gap and flattening pressure must be selected according to the material thickness and ductility. Excessive pressure can mark the surface, deform the folded edge or damage the tooling.

Product Details & Manufacturing Quality

The V6/30° pre-bending groove and flattening surfaces are precision machined to maintain consistent alignment throughout the tool length. Accurate geometry supports repeatable acute pre-bends and uniform flattened edges.

The tool is manufactured from selected 42CrMo alloy steel. Its working areas are hardened to HRC54±2 to improve resistance to groove wear, indentation and deformation during repeated production.

Because the pre-bending and flattening stages apply force differently, the rated load of 60 ton/m must be observed during both operations. The required force must also remain within the capacities of the mating upper tool, clamping system and press brake.
