Typical Applications

This 85° R0.5 gooseneck punch is specifically designed for applications where a conventional straight press brake punch may interfere with the workpiece.

Typical applications include:

  • Collision-avoidance sheet metal bending
  • Offset bending
  • Box and channel bending
  • Return flange bending
  • Deep profile bending
  • Multiple-flange components
  • Previously formed workpieces
  • Complex sheet metal profiles
  • Electrical cabinets and enclosures
  • Machinery components
  • Metal housings
  • Structural sheet metal parts
  • Multi-step bending operations
  • CNC press brake precision bending

Avoiding Workpiece & Tooling Collision

One of the most important advantages of a gooseneck punch is its ability to provide additional clearance between the punch body and the workpiece.

During multi-step bending, a workpiece may already contain formed flanges, return bends, channels, or other raised sections. When a conventional straight punch is used, these existing features can come into contact with the body of the punch.

The gooseneck profile creates an additional open clearance area, allowing the previously formed portion of the workpiece to move into the available space during the next bending operation.

This helps:

  • Reduce the risk of tool-to-workpiece collision
  • Increase clearance around existing flanges
  • Improve access to difficult bending areas
  • Make multi-step bending easier
  • Reduce interference between the punch and previously formed sections
  • Provide greater flexibility for complex sheet metal geometries

For this reason, gooseneck punches are particularly valuable when a standard straight punch cannot reach the required bending position without interfering with the workpiece.

Gooseneck Punch for Complex Bending

The 50 mm wide gooseneck structure provides considerably more clearance than a conventional 27 mm straight punch.

Combined with the 9 mm tip width and R0.5 radius, this configuration provides a balance between working accuracy, tooling strength, and workpiece accessibility.

It is especially suitable for components where the bending sequence creates increasingly restricted working space.

For example, when a workpiece has already been bent on one side, the next bending operation may require the punch to enter an area close to an existing flange. A conventional punch may collide with the formed section, while the gooseneck structure provides the necessary clearance.

The tooling can therefore be used for complex multi-step bending, offset bending, box-shaped parts, channels, return flanges, and other interference-sensitive applications.

The tooling can be manufactured for applications involving major press brake brands and tooling systems, including Amada, TRUMPF, LVD, Bystronic, and WILA, according to the specific machine interface.

Product Details & Manufacturing Quality

The gooseneck punch is manufactured from 42CrMo alloy steel, providing high strength, toughness, wear resistance, and durability for repeated press brake operations.

The working section is heat treated to approximately HRC 54 ± 2, helping maintain dimensional stability and wear resistance during continuous production.

The R0.5 tip radius provides a relatively small forming radius for controlled bending, while the 85° punch angle allows the tooling to be used for a broad range of sheet metal applications.

The defining feature is the gooseneck structure.

Rather than maintaining a conventional straight punch body, the tooling incorporates a recessed/offset area that creates additional space around the workpiece.

This geometry is specifically designed to address one of the most common problems encountered in complex press brake bending:

The workpiece has already been formed, but the next bending operation requires the punch to enter an area where a conventional punch would collide with the existing flange.

The gooseneck structure provides the necessary clearance to reduce this interference.

With a 70 ton/m load capacity, this punch is suitable for many medium-duty industrial bending applications. Actual allowable bending force should always be evaluated according to material type, sheet thickness, bending length, die opening, bending method, and press brake specifications.

Standard & Custom Gooseneck Press Brake Tooling

We manufacture both standard gooseneck punches and fully customized press brake tooling.

Gooseneck tooling is particularly dependent on the actual geometry of the workpiece. A standard gooseneck punch may work for general applications, but complex components may require a specific clearance shape.

Customers can send us their:

  • 2D workpiece drawings
  • 3D models
  • Bending drawings
  • Existing tooling drawings
  • Machine specifications
  • Workpiece samples

Our engineering team can provide a free press brake tooling design service and determine the appropriate gooseneck geometry according to the customer's actual bending requirements.

Customization options include:

  • Overall tooling height
  • Total tooling width
  • Gooseneck depth
  • Gooseneck opening
  • Clearance geometry
  • Tip width
  • Tip radius
  • Punch angle
  • Tooling length
  • Special relief structures
  • Machine-specific mounting dimensions
  • Customized upper and lower tooling sets

For complex workpieces, we can also analyze tool-to-workpiece interference, bending sequence, flange clearance, punch access, and collision risks before manufacturing.

This allows us to design a gooseneck punch around the actual workpiece geometry rather than simply providing a standard profile.
