Description
The WYS LVD-type V50 high single-V die is specially designed for large sheet-metal components and multi-step bending operations that require additional clearance around the lower tool.
The die has a 50 mm V-opening, commonly referred to as V50, together with a 78° V-groove angle. Its overall height is 169 mm, including a 150 mm effective working height and a 19 mm lower mounting section.
Compared with a conventional lower die, the taller body raises the bending position above the press brake table. This provides additional clearance for previously formed flanges and helps reduce interference during the second bending operation of large Z-shaped components.
The die has an overall width of 70 mm and a maximum load capacity of 110 ton/m. Its wide and robust body provides stable support and reliable force transmission for medium- and heavy-duty sheet-metal bending within the rated capacity.

Typical Applications
- Bending large Z-shaped sheet-metal components
- Second bending operations requiring clearance for a previously formed flange
- Manufacturing large offset and stepped profiles
- Forming deep channels and structural sheet-metal parts
- Fabrication of machinery covers and industrial enclosures
- Cabinet, enclosure and electrical-panel production
- Air bending with a V50 lower die
- Bending relatively thick material within the specified tool capacity
- Applications requiring controlled overbending for springback compensation
- LVD-type CNC, hydraulic and servo-electric press brakes
This die can also be manufactured with other mounting interfaces for press brake systems using Amada, TRUMPF, Bystronic or WILA-style tooling, subject to the customer’s machine specifications.
High Die Design for Large Z-Shaped Components
A Z-shaped component is normally produced through two or more bending operations. After the first flange has been formed, it may extend downward or sideways during the second bend. When a standard-height lower die is used, this flange can interfere with the lower tool holder, press brake table or nearby machine structure.
The 150 mm effective height raises the V-groove and bending line, creating additional space below and around the workpiece. This helps the previously formed flange pass around the lower tooling during the next bending operation.
This structure is especially valuable for larger Z-shaped products with long flanges or significant offset dimensions. The actual available clearance should still be checked according to the flange length, bending sequence, upper-punch profile and press brake configuration.
V50 Opening for Larger Bending Applications
The 50 mm V-opening is suitable for larger components and relatively thicker sheet materials when compared with narrower V-dies. It provides a larger forming space and can reduce the required bending force for a given sheet thickness.
The V-opening also influences the natural inside bend radius and minimum flange length. A wider opening generally creates a larger inside radius and requires a longer minimum flange. Therefore, the correct tool selection should consider:
- Sheet thickness
- Material type and tensile strength
- Required inside bend radius
- Minimum flange dimension
- Required final angle
- Available press brake tonnage
- Surface-quality requirements
WYS can calculate and recommend the appropriate punch radius, punch angle and V-opening after reviewing the customer’s workpiece drawing.
78° Groove for Springback Compensation
The 78° V-groove provides sufficient angular clearance for controlled overbending. This allows the workpiece to be bent slightly beyond the required final angle to compensate for springback after the press brake releases the forming force.
The 78° groove does not mean the final workpiece must have a 78° angle. When matched with a suitable upper punch and correct CNC settings, the die can be used to produce common finished angles such as 90°.
The final result depends on:
- Upper-punch angle
- Punch penetration depth
- Material properties
- Sheet thickness
- Rolling direction
- Inside bend radius
- Actual material springback
169 mm Overall Height and 110 Ton/m Capacity
The die consists of a 150 mm effective tool body and a 19 mm lower mounting tang, producing a total height of 169 mm. Its 70 mm overall width provides a strong structural foundation for the V50 opening and helps distribute bending force evenly through the tool body.
The maximum rated load is 110 ton/m. Actual bending force must remain within the rated capacity of the lower die, upper punch, tool holder and press brake. The usable capacity may also be affected by the bending length, segmented arrangement, plate thickness and material tensile strength.
Full-Length and Segmented Tooling
This LVD-type V50 die can be supplied as a continuous full-length tool or divided into segments. Segmented tooling provides greater flexibility when bending boxes, short workpieces, localized profiles and products with side flanges.
The following options can be customized:
- Overall tool length
- Number of segments
- Individual segment lengths
- Standard sectional arrangement
- Left- and right-hand horn sections
- Special short sections for box bending
The segmentation plan can be designed according to the customer’s press brake length and typical product dimensions.
Product Details / Manufacturing Quality
The lower die is manufactured from high-strength 42CrMo alloy steel to provide good rigidity, toughness and resistance to deformation. The V-groove, die shoulders, reference surfaces and lower mounting tang are precision-machined to ensure accurate alignment and consistent bending results.
Applicable working areas can be hardened to HRC54 ± 2 to improve wear resistance and extend service life. Dimensional inspection is performed to control the V-opening, groove angle, overall height, effective height, straightness and mounting-interface accuracy.
The groove bottom uses a smooth radius transition to reduce excessive stress concentration. The exact groove-bottom radius can be customized according to the plate thickness, material and forming requirements.
Optional Black Oxide Finish and Surface Coating
Black oxide treatment is available to give the tool a uniform professional appearance and provide a degree of short-term corrosion protection during storage and transportation.
Special surface coatings can also be applied according to the customer’s operating conditions. An appropriate coating may help improve surface hardness, wear resistance and durability or reduce material adhesion during production.
Available surface-treatment options can include:
- Standard machined finish
- Black oxide finish
- Anti-rust surface treatment
- Wear-resistant coating
- Application-specific surface coating
The appropriate treatment will be recommended according to the workpiece material, production volume, operating environment and surface-quality requirements.
