Description
The WYS LVD-type V78 heavy-duty lower die is designed for bending relatively thick sheet metal and large structural components that require a wide V-opening, high load capacity and increased working height.
The die features a 78 mm V-opening, commonly designated as V78, together with a 78° V-groove angle. Based on the commonly used air-bending guideline in which the V-opening is approximately eight times the sheet thickness, this die is generally suitable for bending plate around 10 mm thick.
The actual applicable thickness must be verified according to the material grade, tensile strength, bending length, required inside radius, minimum flange length and available press brake tonnage.
With an overall height of 169 mm, an effective height of 150 mm and an overall width of 100 mm, the die provides a strong and stable structure. Its maximum load capacity of 230 ton/m makes it suitable for demanding medium- and heavy-plate bending applications within the rated capacity.

Full Product Description
The WYS LVD-type V78 lower die is a large, heavy-duty press brake tool developed for bending thicker sheet metal and plate. It features a 78 mm V-opening, commonly designated as V78, together with a 78° groove angle.
The die has an overall height of 169 mm, including a 150 mm effective working height, and an overall width of 100 mm. Its large cross-section provides strong structural support and a maximum load capacity of 230 ton/m.
Based on the commonly used air-bending guideline in which the V-opening is approximately eight times the sheet thickness, the V78 opening is generally suitable for bending mild steel around 10 mm thick. The final tool selection must still consider the material grade, tensile strength, bending length, required inside radius, minimum flange and available press brake tonnage.

Typical Applications
- Air bending approximately 10 mm mild steel plate
- Heavy-duty sheet-metal and plate fabrication
- Forming large structural components
- Manufacturing heavy machinery covers and frames
- Production of large channels and support profiles
- Agricultural and construction machinery components
- Industrial cabinets and heavy-duty enclosures
- Large workpieces requiring increased lower-tool clearance
- Bending operations requiring a V78 opening and high load capacity
- Springback compensation using controlled overbending
- LVD-type CNC, hydraulic and servo-electric press brakes
The indicated plate thickness is a general reference rather than a fixed limitation. High-strength steel, stainless steel and other materials may require different V-openings, bending forces, punch radii or tooling capacities.
V78 Opening for Approximately 10 mm Plate
For general mild-steel air bending, a V-opening of approximately six to twelve times the plate thickness may be selected depending on the material, required radius and bending conditions. A ratio close to eight times the plate thickness is commonly used as a practical starting point.
The 78 mm V-opening is therefore well suited to approximately 10 mm mild steel under typical air-bending conditions. However, the final selection should consider:
- Material type and tensile strength
- Plate thickness
- Bending length
- Required inside bend radius
- Minimum flange length
- Required finished angle
- Press brake tonnage
- Surface-quality requirements
The V78 opening normally produces a larger natural inside bend radius than a narrow V-die. It also requires a sufficiently long flange to ensure stable support on both die shoulders.
Heavy-Duty 230 Ton/m Load Capacity
Thick-plate bending generates significantly greater forming force than thin-sheet applications. The 100 mm-wide tool body provides a large load-bearing cross-section and helps transmit the bending force through the lower die.
With a rated maximum load capacity of 230 ton/m, this die is suitable for demanding bending operations within its specified capacity. Before production, the calculated bending force must be checked against the capacity of:
- Lower die
- Upper punch
- Tool holders
- Clamping system
- Press brake
- Machine table and crowning system
The allowable working load may also be affected by the tool length, segmented arrangement and concentration of force over a short bending area.
High Die Design for Improved Clearance
The die has a 150 mm effective height and a total height of 169 mm. This elevated structure raises the V-groove and bending line above the press brake table.
Additional working height can provide more clearance for large sheet-metal components, wide plates and workpieces that already contain formed flanges. It may also help reduce interference during multi-step bending, including the production of large Z-shaped, offset or channel profiles.
The actual clearance should be verified using the workpiece drawing, upper-punch geometry, bending sequence and press brake configuration.
78° Groove for Springback Compensation
The 78° V-groove provides sufficient angular space for controlled overbending. This is useful when the workpiece needs to be bent slightly beyond its target angle to compensate for elastic springback.
The finished workpiece is not limited to a 78° angle. When combined with a suitable upper punch and correct press brake settings, this lower die can be used to produce common finished angles such as 90°.
The final angle depends on the upper-punch angle, penetration depth, material properties, plate thickness, rolling direction and actual springback.
Product Details / Manufacturing Quality
The lower die is manufactured from 42CrMo alloy steel, providing high strength, toughness and resistance to deformation under demanding bending loads.
The V-groove, die shoulders, reference surfaces and lower mounting tang are precision-machined to ensure accurate alignment and stable positioning. Applicable working areas can be hardened to HRC54 ± 2 to improve wear resistance and extend service life.
Dimensional and quality inspections can include:
- V-opening measurement
- V-groove angle inspection
- Overall and effective height inspection
- Tool width verification
- Straightness and parallelism inspection
- Mounting-interface verification
- Surface-hardness inspection
The rounded groove bottom provides a smooth transition and helps reduce excessive stress concentration. Its radius can be customized according to the customer’s plate thickness and forming requirements.
Optional Black Oxide Finish and Surface Coating
Black oxide treatment can be applied to provide a uniform professional appearance and a degree of corrosion protection during transportation and storage.
Specialized surface coatings are also available according to the workpiece material, production volume and operating environment. A suitable coating can help improve wear resistance, reduce friction or minimize material adhesion during repeated production.
Available surface-treatment options include:
- Standard machined finish
- Black oxide treatment
- Anti-rust surface treatment
- Wear-resistant coating
- Application-specific protective coating
Because the forming shoulders are the main contact areas of the lower die, the appropriate surface treatment should be selected according to both tooling durability and workpiece surface requirements.
Full-Length and Segmented Tooling
The V78 lower die can be manufactured as a continuous full-length tool or divided into customized segments.
Segmented tooling is suitable for:
- Bending products of different lengths
- Localized bending operations
- Box and enclosure production
- Easier handling of heavy tooling
- Simplified tool installation and storage
- Replacement of individual damaged sections
The overall length, number of sections and individual segment lengths can all be manufactured according to customer requirements.
Standard & Custom Press Brake Tooling
WYS supplies standard and customized LVD-type upper punches, lower dies and complete press brake tooling combinations. This V78 die can be modified to match different materials, plate thicknesses, press brakes and product geometries.
Available customization options include:
