28° V16 Spring-Loaded Hemming Die for 2 mm Sheet Metal
This spring-loaded hemming die is designed for sheet metal components that require an acute pre-bend followed by a final flattening or hemming operation.
The illustrated tooling combines a 28° V16 acute bending opening with a spring-supported movable die structure.
During the first operation, the sheet metal edge is formed to an acute angle using the V16 opening.
For the second operation, the pre-bent workpiece is repositioned into the flattening area of the tooling. As the press brake ram moves downward, the movable section is compressed while the machine supplies the forming force required to flatten the folded edge.
After the press brake ram retracts, the internal springs return the moving tooling section to its original position.
This two-stage mechanical design integrates acute bending, flattening and automatic spring return in one compact tooling assembly.
Two-Stage Hemming Process
First Operation – 28° Acute Pre-Bending
In the first press brake stroke, the workpiece is bent using the 28° V16 opening.
This operation produces the acute preliminary bend required before final flattening.
Second Operation – Spring-Assisted Flattening
The pre-bent flange is then repositioned into the flattening section.
During the second stroke, the press brake applies the required force while the movable tooling section compresses against the internal spring system.
The folded edge is progressively flattened until the required hem geometry is achieved.
Automatic Spring Return
When the press brake ram retracts, the spring system pushes the movable section back to its initial position.

Working Principle
The spring-loaded hemming die performs the hemming process in two separate press brake operations.
First, the sheet metal is bent to an acute angle using the 28° V16 opening.
The pre-bent workpiece is then repositioned for the flattening operation.
During the second press brake stroke, the machine applies the required forming force while the movable die section travels against the internal spring system.
The folded edge is flattened to the required final condition.
