Description

This WILA Type 28° acute-angle punch is a precision press brake upper tool developed for deep acute bending, hemming preparation and multi-stage sheet metal forming. Its narrow working profile allows the material to be formed to a much smaller included angle than a conventional 85°, 86°, 88° or 90° press brake punch.

One of its principal applications is the first bending stage of a sheet metal hemming operation. The punch can be paired with a suitable acute-angle lower die to create the initial pre-bend. The partially folded workpiece can then be transferred to appropriate flattening or hemming tooling to complete the closed or partially closed hem.

The 28° punch angle is also suitable for producing sharp angular profiles and preparing components for subsequent forming operations. Its R1 mm tip radius provides concentrated and accurate bend-line control, while the 24 mm tool width gives the punch a stable load-bearing structure.

With a 120 mm working height and maximum load capacity of 100 ton/m, this upper punch provides a practical combination of working clearance, structural strength and forming versatility. It is manufactured from 42CrMo alloy tool steel and hardened to HRC54±2 for dependable resistance to wear and deformation.

Typical Applications

This WILA Type 28° acute-angle punch is suitable for:

  • Deep acute-angle sheet metal bending
  • Pre-bending before a flattening or hemming operation
  • Producing open, closed or teardrop hems through multi-stage forming
  • Creating sharp angular profiles
  • Preparing bends for subsequent forming operations
  • Bending mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium sheet
  • Electrical cabinets and metal enclosures
  • HVAC ducts and ventilation components
  • Automotive and transportation sheet metal parts
  • Metal furniture and architectural components
  • Precision sheet metal fabrication
  • CNC hydraulic and servo-electric press brake applications

In a typical hemming process, this punch performs the initial acute pre-bend rather than the final flattening operation. A suitable hemming die, flattening tool or two-stage hemming system is required to complete the folded edge.

The actual permissible material thickness and bending length depend on material tensile strength, lower-die V-opening, forming method and press brake capacity. The calculated force must remain within the rated capacities of the punch, lower die and machine.

Product Details & Manufacturing Quality

The punch is manufactured from selected 42CrMo alloy tool steel to provide a reliable combination of strength, toughness and fatigue resistance. Its working area is hardened to HRC54±2, improving resistance to indentation, deformation and wear during repeated production.

Precision machining maintains the accuracy of the narrow 28° working profile and R1 mm tip radius across the tool length. This supports consistent bend-line positioning and repeatable acute-angle forming.

Because acute bending and hemming can create high localized stresses, the lower die, V-opening and working load must be selected carefully. The R1 tip radius should also be evaluated against the sheet thickness, material properties and desired internal bend radius to reduce the risk of material cracking or tool overloading.

The punch can be supplied in a continuous length or as a segmented set. Segmented tooling is especially useful for boxes, trays, localized hems and workpieces with complex bending sequences.
