A custom spring-loaded press brake hemming die designed for two-stage acute bending and flattening of approximately 1.5 mm sheet metal. The tooling shown features a 28° V12 opening, a 60 mm wide lower base, an overall tooling height of approximately 150 mm, and a maximum rated load capacity of 100 ton/m. During hemming, the spring-supported moving section allows the tooling to transition from the initial acute bending operation to the final flattening stage. After the press brake ram retracts, the internal springs automatically return the moving section to its original position. The V-opening, angle, tooling height, base width, hemming clearance and lower-die mounting interface can all be customized according to the workpiece and press brake system.

28° V12 Spring-Loaded Hemming Die for 1.5 mm Sheet Metal
This spring-loaded hemming die is designed for sheet metal components that require an acute pre-bend followed by a final flattening or hemming operation.
The illustrated tooling incorporates a 28° V12 acute bending opening together with a spring-supported movable die structure.
During the first operation, the sheet metal edge is formed to an acute angle using the V12 opening.
For the second operation, the pre-bent edge is repositioned into the flattening section of the tooling. As the press brake ram moves downward, the movable section is compressed against the internal spring system, allowing the tooling to flatten the folded edge.
After the ram retracts, the springs expand and return the movable section to its initial working position.
This configuration combines acute bending, flattening and automatic mechanical return in one compact press brake hemming tool assembly.
Two-Stage Hemming Process
First Operation – 28° Acute Pre-Bending
The first press brake stroke forms the sheet in the 28° V12 opening.
This creates the acute preliminary bend required before the final hemming operation.
Second Operation – Spring-Assisted Flattening
The pre-bent flange is then repositioned into the flattening area.
During the second stroke, the press brake applies the required forming force while the movable die section compresses the internal springs.
The folded edge is progressively flattened until the required hem geometry is achieved.
Automatic Spring Return
When the press brake ram retracts, the stored spring force returns the movable tooling section to its original position.
The tool is then ready for the next forming cycle.

Working Principle
The spring-loaded hemming die performs the forming process in two separate press brake strokes.
First, the sheet metal is bent to an acute angle using the 28° V12 opening.
The pre-bent workpiece is then repositioned for flattening.
During the second press brake stroke, the moving section of the hemming die is compressed while the press brake applies the forming force required to flatten the folded edge.
The internal springs provide mechanical support during movement and automatically reset the tooling after the press brake ram returns.
This structure provides a practical mechanical hemming solution without requiring pneumatic cylinders or other external actuating systems.
